Rodney Lucas Demonstration 1.2.12 A Farm in Genesis Oils

It was a very cold night, nevertheless we had a good turnout to watch the demonstration by Rodney Lucas President of Virginia Water Art Society. Rodney demonstrated the use of Genesis Oil which have are quite different to other oils in that they do not dry until dried with either a hair dryer or placed in the oven to dry. Rodney used the oils and painted a farm scene using artistic licence to slightly alter the image from his original photograph in order to enhance the composition. In under two hours Rodney amazingly completed all but the final touches of his painting and passed on his tips and hints for using the oils whilst working. The members thoroughly enjoyed his demonstration and it was well worth braving the weather.

I attended an art school for one year at the end of my school days, but I did not take up art for a living I became a camera salesman for a few years before and after three years in the R.A.F. I then took up driving jobs in London Transport, B.O.A.C. London Country and M.O.D.

I retired in 1997 when I saw an article in the local paper on John Green who had started art classes at Littleton Lane Chertsey and for the last twelve years my sister Marie Cooke and I have attended John Green's classes. John is an excellent teacher and I’ve managed to get several commissions over the last few years.

Despite the rain and wind Virginia Water Art Society meeting saw quite a few members turning out to see the demonstration by Kim Page, the scene was of a street in Bath on a busy afternoon. Kim showed us how he paints figures in this scene, and how the shape and pose can denote gender as well as how to blend in people in a crowd, also how figures in the distance can be painted with just a suggestion of shape and form. using coloured pastel paper Kim went on to show how the colour of the paper can enhance the over all tone and by putting in the white using gouache at the final stages can give the painting lift and sparkle. We have always enjoyed Kim's demonstrations and he did not fail to give us an entertaining and very informative watercolour demonstration.

Virginia Water Art Society were extremely luck to have welcomed the Mayor of Runnymede to our Winter exhibition held at the Community Centre Trumps Green on Saturday 3rd December 2011. We asked the Mayor Cllr David Par to choose his favourite painting and during his walk through the exhibition he placed printed cards of commendation on paintings he felt had earned a special mention The Favourite painting of the Mayors was "The Wave" by Marie Cook (see Paintings by Marie Cook)

I started painting some 7 years ago when my wife bought me a subscription to a magazine course on watercolour, and I quickly caught the bug. I remember going to my first art class with 2 brushes, a watercolour pad and a pencil and rubber – I couldn’t get all my kit into the back of a station wagon now.

I attended art classes at local colleges and got early encouragement when a painting sold at a local exhibition. Several years ago, I attended a demonstration by Ali Cockrean and was intrigued by her work in acrylics, so I joined her excellent class for some time, despite it being a bit of a journey. I then had a year when work was going to disrupt regular classes, which prompted me to opt for a distance-learning course with the Regent Academy. Although I couldn’t recommend it for everyone, it was good for me as it broadly followed the structure of a traditional art course – drawing, composition etc – with assessed projects mainly in acrylics. I currently attend Aurora Spain's classes at Jagz in Ascot. These are great fun but also very helpful as Aurora is an accredited teacher of the Michael Wilcox technique of colour study, so can de-mystify colour blending - something I really needed

I joined the Virginia Water Art Society a year ago and promptly got equal first in the winter exhibition – very jammy – it was the frame wot did it, said my wife. I thought the outdoor summer exhibition was a real blast – quite unique and a lovely opportunity to chat with other members. My wife and I are planning to move to Dorset shortly, to be closer to our elder daughter and grandchildren. Something of a sudden move and influenced more than a bit by the lovely landscapes there. Trouble is, I’ve never done landscapes – anyone got a good book?

Curtis Tappenden Talk and Demonstration Sketchbook and Poetry 2.11.11

This evening saw the most entertaining and action packed demonstration that Virginia Water Art Society have witness in quite a while. Curtis Tappenden started the evening with slides from his and others sketchbooks with accompanying poetry, giving us an incite to what inspires his art and how words plays a big part in his work. His animated poetry reading certainly ensured the audience were with him. In the second half of the evening Curtis talked us through his thinking process as he sketched using pens ink and watercolour in a most entertaining manner.

Marie Cook

Marie joined Virginia Water Art Society in 2001. During the intervening years she has served as Treasurer for nine years and concurrently as Vice Chairman for three years. During 2010 she was also joint chairman with Pam Hawkins until the Present Chairman Jean McDonnell was elected.

She obtained an ‘O’ Level in Art at grammar school which she says seems like 100 years ago and for the past twelve years has attended the ‘Littleton Amateur Artist’ classes under Artist John Bergwin Green

Kim Page Workshop with Virginia Water Art Society members 15.10.11

Eleven of us gathered together in the Church Hall in Virginia Water to prepare for a workshop with Kim Page who is a very talented local Artist who's water colours are superb. Kim joined us in the church hall and firstly demonstrated an Autumn scene showing and explaining his technique. After which some of us attempted to paint our own version of this scene and some opted to paint their own Autumn composition. After lunch Kim did individual paintings with each of us concentrating on skies, trees, or water these painted sketches we were able to take away with us as a reminder of the method and colours he used. We all enjoyed our day with Kim Page and look forward to seeing him again when he does a demonstration at our monthly meeting in January 2012

Henry Rimmer Demonstration in Watercolour 5.10.11

This Months Demonstrator Henry Rimmer showed us his method of painting with watercolour Henry at the age of eighty has been painting and demonstrating for a good many years and his calm and methodical approach made the process look amazingly easy. The picture he painted this evening he has kindly donated to the Society and will be framed and raffled at the November meeting.

The picture below shows me holding the award that had been made by Doug Coe and carries the name of Pat Hare who was a founder member of the Society and when she died she left the Society a legacy. We have had the paint pallet shaped award made in her honour and The Mayor of Runnymede David Parr will choose a favourite painting at the winter exhibition this year and the Artist of that painting will receive the Pat Hare award which will have their name engraved upon it and they will keep the award for 1 year, the process will then be repeated the following year.

As a little girl keen oncricket I made sketchbooks of cricketers in action and British wild birds – whythose I do not know! At school it was huge murals for the hall at Christmas andscenery for our many school plays then at college I took Art as a subsidiarysubject with the intention of offering it when I started teaching. However whenI had my first opportunity to do so the Principal told me I must work only inpencil and paper – anything else was too messy for the cleaners! End of my aspirationsand any chance of colourful artistic expression for the pupils!

My career teaching Sciences took me from Birminghamto New Zealand and thence, on return, to Surrey for 31 years of which I spent18 years as a Secondary Headteacher. Very little time for painting except oneAdult Education ‘Parent and Child’ class which Kate and I enjoyed immensely,school blackboard work and holidays spent putting Dulux gloss and emulsion onthe walls at home! When I retired, knowing my artistic ambitions, the pupilsand staff presented me with enough art stuff to open a shop! This has had lots of use at home and inclasses, on courses and is now regularly updated with Christmas and Birthdaypresents! These come mostly from Brian, with whom I live in Chobham, and mydaughter, Kate, and three grand-daughters who live in Brookwood.

I am still painting birds but now mostly paintwatercolour or acrylic landscapes which I like to do outdoors or from my ownphotographs. I adore the UK and its unique scenery but we are also able totravel abroad a lot and I am always searching for that ‘wow’ picture. We arevery conservative in our choice of destinations and only do Northern France,where we have a second home, Australia and New Zealand and Playa Blanca for achill out week every now and then!

The stimulating yet relaxed and friendly atmospheresat the Runnymede and Virginia Water Art Societies are great. There is such alot going on, the venues are superb and I just love getting in there andgetting on with it! The Outreach work with the under 5s is a delight and bringsback all my nearly forgotten teaching skills! And what a first class experience‘On the Green’ is! This local ‘Montmartre’ puts the work of the Virginia Waterartists right into the heart of the community and is a very special occasionfor meeting others and sharing ideas. I am very appreciative of all those whomake these experiences possible. Thank you.

The September meeting at Virginia Water Art Society saw a demonstration of seas and skies by Heather Jollife in watercolour. Heather's demonstration showed the way in which she handles her brushes to obtain the different effects of both waves and clouds and we were also shown the use of wax in order to leave highlights in the water which was very effective.

Runnymede Art Fair Promoting Virginia Water Art Society

I spent the day on the meads at Runnymede on Bank Holiday Monday promoting the Virginia Water Art Society giving out complimentary tickets for people to come and see our demonstrations and giving out the web site address for prospective members to see what we are about. It was a glorious day and I spoke to lots of local people who showed interest in our Society and hopefully we will see some new faces at our next meeting. I also spoke to the exhibitors about their work and we may possibly see some of them at future demonstrations.

My name is Patricia Lumley, I have been married to my wonderful husband Robert for over 50 years, we live in Virginia Water and have two amazing sons who now live with their wives . I have been writing poetry since the 70’s but didn’t start painting until I was 50 as I was so busy bring up my two boys and running two businesses. A hairdressing salon in Sunningdale with my husband and also a gift shop and although hard work it was great fun and I met some very interesting people.

Living near the beautiful Virginia Water lake, I have never been short of inspiration for my painting or poetry, although my favourite subjects for painting more often come from my imagination. I belong to several local art societies, Sunningdale, Virginia Water and Runnymede and through art I have made some wonderful friendships with fellow Artists.

I recently took part in an exchange of paintings and poetry with Poets from Herndon Virginia USA. My paintings were on display in the USA and in the process I met and became friends with other Poets and Artists.

Chris Christoferou came to Virginia Water Art Society today to talk to our members, the subject being "beauty in your back garden" however Chris has the most unusual visitors to his garden the first half of his talk covered wild cats and jungle animals which of course were not residents of his back garden but his paintings were extremely good and his slides showed how he had decided upon his composition in order to give the best to his paintings the second half contained slides of genuine inhabitants of his back garden with the most beautiful pictures of wildlife which Chris was very knowledgeable about, his talk was most entertaining and very instructive. He also donated one of his very fine prints as a raffle prize which was much appreciated. The members of our Society enjoyed Chris's talk and found his composition tips helpful and inspiring

Virginia Water Art Society Summer Exhibition 9th July 2011 held on The Green Station Approach Virginia Water Surrey

This year we decided to hold the exhibition in July instead of June hoping for better weather and also less clashing with other local events. We did have one or two showers throughout the day but but the hardy Artists braved the weather and stuck it out covering their paintings with polythene until the showers passed. We had with lots of interest from the public and sold 19 paintings lots of pottery and some jewellery and were rewarded with a small profit. The event is the highlight in our social calendar and a chance for all our members to catch up with each other and was most enjoyable.

My name is Patsy Moore, married for over 47 years to my husband Jack and have two lovely grown up children, Ralph and Tracy. We enjoy living in rural England in Sunningdale village.

Now retired, I have returned to my love of painting, which was on ‘hold’ since I was at school, having married early. I got my ‘O’ Level and ‘A’ Level in Art at The Convent of the Sacred Heart in Hammersmith, London and then went on to Kingsway College in Holborn to take my ONC in Mechanical Engineering as I was training to be a draughtswoman with London Transport.

I met and married my husband in 1962 and started a family early, so art had to be on a back burner! When the children were at Secondary School, I returned to College to take a Diploma in Business Studies and progressed in business to the position of Vice-President of Human Resources for a Swedish company.

Finally, retirement has enabled me to return to a hobby I love. I joined an art group in Old Windsor and attended for two years and then the Runnymede Art Society (RAS) was recommended to me by a friend. The past few years with the RAS has been enlightening and the friendship made with so many talented artists has been most satisfying.

More recently I joined Virginia Water Art Society and find inspiration from the very talented professional demonstrators each month. I have exhibited with the Societies to which I belong and have sold with some success and I am looking forward to my second year exhibiting on the green at the Summer Exhibition.

I have always painted as far back as I can remember, at junior school I would get into trouble for sketching at the back of the class whilst other lessons were in progress. On leaving school I trained as a cabinetmaker, during the war I served in the Royal Navy mainly in the Mediterranean, during my spare time I painted portraits of my shipmates which was a great help when in later years I was commissioned to paint portraits. After the Navy I returned to civilian life where I worked on design and build, which gave me a greater outlet for my interest in art, spare time was devoted to painting, initially in oils and later in watercolour and acrylics. I was asked to design and paint scenery for local pantomimes and musicals, a chance to paint large pictures on massive back drops. I belong to two local Art Societies with which I exhibit several times a year and have had several commissions as a result. I have tutored workshops in schools with children of all ages and in recent years I have tutored workshops for local art societies including Runnymede Art Society. I produce illustrations to accompany talks which my daughter Avril gives to local schools throughout Surrey for the Charity F.A.C.T Faith Aware in Children Trust. I have spent most of my life painting and never loose my enthusiasm, I am always looking to improve and still get great enjoyment out of painting.

Prayer

The day draws us to end

along to the water's edge,

like a fisherman's net

weighted by the troubles of the world.

We bold few fishermen,

do not take shelter in the artificial light,

instead we bow and peer deep into the depths,

over the weathered and splintered edges

of our buoyant wooden pews.

Huddled in our boats,

we lift our lanterns high

to push back the shadows set upon the world.

Keeping the thousand year old vigil

of which Christ's rock was a brethren.

The heavens bear witness.

We are not oblivious to the encroaching darkness,

but, know if we step upon the water, like Peter,

we will sink.

Virginia Water Art Society members were treated to a very entertaining evening with Mike Skidmore who produced an oil portrait using a very unusual method of first drawing the face then glazing over it with a dark glaze then with a rag removing some of the glaze to show varying tonal shapes depicting highlighted areas which produced a very effective image which he then began to work on with colour

"Born with a pencil in his hand" - quote from his mother! Rodney won the O Level art prize at his grammar school, then confounded the school by wanting to continue art to A Level for which the school simply did not cater. Fortunately the local art school was next door, so he went there for art lessons. He won the art prize again for A Level - no competition!

He has now been painting regularly for about 40 years and was for 33 years a committee member of Virginia Water Art Society, of which he is now president.

He says he has learned a lot from many wonderful painting demonstrations and also benefited from tutored painting holidays, mainly with the late Bill Voss. He paints in watercolour, pastel or oil and also enjoys pen and ink work. Favourite subjects are landscape, usually with buildings, or outright townscape. He is now painting more and more since taking early retirement and has accepted a number of commissions, usually of peoples houses. However, the pictures here were created simply for the pleasure of painting.

Virginia Water Art Society were fortunate enough to have a Demonstration by Vic Bearcroft tonight and not only did we learn a good deal about pastel painting but also thanks to Vic's informative demonstration we now know a great deal more about animals in general and big cats in particular The demonstration was very much enjoyed by everyone

At last the A.G.M. was able to take place for the Virginia Water Art Society after having to postpone the event from our December calendar we were able hear the reprots from last years activities and the Treasurers report and to vote in the new committee members and re-elect the existing ones Rodney Lucas as President officiated the elections of Jean McDonnell as Chairman & Publicity Secretary Marie Cooke as Vice Chairman Liz Ford will continue for the time being as secretary Julie Osborne as Membership Secretary Pam Hawkins as Programme Secretary Rosa Sears as Outings organizer other members Patricia Lumley, Douglas Coe, Patsy Moore after the business of the day the members of the Society enjoyed a social gathering with food and wine.
